An Image A Week: Christina Lauer

Man's tumultuous relationship with nature is a common theme in contemporary photography. German photographer Christina Lauer has taken this idea and explored it through the capture of animals at the zoo. She has raised interesting questions about man's manipulation of the natural environment. In their attempt to mimic authentic natural scenes, these zoo-scape's ultimately exude synthetic insincerity. Lauer questions the fate of confined animals by stating:

"...The attempt of a museum like presentation also raises questions about our views of nature and naturalness. The ‘dwelling’ animal exists far away from it’s original purpose - function and future are ambiguous."
